How to Install a Webasto Thermo Top C in Your RV or Truck (Step-by-Step Guide)

Why Install a Thermo Top C?

The Webasto Thermo Top C is a 5 kW diesel-powered coolant heater designed to pre-warm your engine and cabin without idling. For RV owners, it means hot water and warm interior on cold mornings. For truck fleets, it means faster morning starts, less engine wear, and lower fuel bills compared to overnight idling.

This guide walks through a typical installation. Always verify your vehicle’s specific mounting points, fuel line routing, and electrical requirements before starting.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Webasto Thermo Top C heater unit (12V or 24V — match your vehicle system)
  • Mounting bracket and hardware
  • Fuel pickup tube or T-fitting for the diesel tank
  • Coolant hoses, clamps, and Y-connector for the engine cooling loop
  • Exhaust pipe and through-hull/through-floor fitting
  • 12V/24V wiring harness, fuse, and control panel (7-day timer or smart controller)
  • Basic hand tools, drill, hole saw, torque wrench

Step 1: Choose the Mounting Location

The Thermo Top C should be mounted in a well-ventilated compartment, away from living areas, with access for future servicing. Common locations:

  • RVs: exterior storage bay, under-bed compartment, or rear locker
  • Trucks: frame rail behind the cab, under-bunk compartment, or side locker

Ensure at least 10 cm clearance from combustible materials. The unit must be level within 15 degrees for proper fuel metering.

Step 2: Mount the Heater

Bolt the mounting bracket to a structural surface. Slide the heater onto the bracket and secure with the locking screws. Do not over-tighten — the housing is cast aluminum.

Step 3: Connect the Coolant Loop

The Thermo Top C taps into your engine’s coolant circuit. Cut the lower radiator hose (or heater supply hose) and install a Y-connector. Route coolant to the heater inlet and return it downstream. This allows the heater to warm the engine block and cabin heater core simultaneously.

Use reinforced silicone coolant hose rated for 120°C+ operation. Double-clamp every joint.

Step 4: Install the Fuel Line

The heater draws diesel directly from your main tank via a metering fuel pump. Install the fuel pickup in the tank (drill a 25 mm hole, use the supplied gasket) or tee into an existing fuel line. Route the fuel line away from exhaust and hot surfaces. The fuel pump should be mounted below the tank level for reliable priming.

Replace the fuel filter every 2 seasons — a clogged filter is the #1 cause of F01 and F03 fault codes.

Step 5: Exhaust System

Route the stainless exhaust to the outside of the vehicle. Use a through-floor fitting with a heat shield. Maintain a slight downward slope toward the outlet to prevent condensation buildup. Never terminate exhaust under a window, vent, or living compartment.

Step 6: Electrical Connections

Wire directly to the battery (or a dedicated 30A circuit) with the supplied fuse. Connect the control panel — the 7-day timer lets you schedule morning warm-ups. For smart control, pair with a compatible GSM or WiFi module so you can start the heater from your phone.

Confirm voltage: 12V units draw ~3A during startup, ~1A steady-state. 24V units are for heavy trucks.

Step 7: Bleed and Test

Fill the coolant system and bleed air from the heater loop. Turn on the heater and run it for 10 minutes. Check for coolant leaks, exhaust leaks, and proper combustion (clean blue flame, no smoke). The first start may take 60-90 seconds as the fuel line primes.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mounting the unit too steep (causes fuel metering errors and F07 flame-out faults)
  • Using undersized coolant hose (reduces heat output)
  • Exhaust termination too close to air intakes
  • Forgetting the fuel filter (leads to premature fuel pump failure)
  • Not bleeding coolant (air lock causes overheating and F04 faults)

After Installation: Maintenance Basics

A properly installed Thermo Top C will run 8-10 years with basic care. Every fall, replace the glow plug, inspect the burner chamber, and clean the flame detector. Keep a spare fuel pump and blower motor on hand for fleet vehicles.
